Polylactic acid (PLA) - fibers

PLA

Polylactic acid (PLA) is an environmentally friendly polymer that is made from renewable raw materials and is biodegradable. It belongs to the class of the polyesters and is produced by combining lactic acid molecules in a polymerization process.

ADVANTAGES AND PROPERTIES OF POLYLACTIC ACID:

Biodegradable and compostable:

PLA is environmentally friendly as it is derived from renewable resources such as corn starch, sugar cane or other plant materials. It is biodegradable under suitable conditions and breaks down into natural compounds such as carbon dioxide and water. PLA is also compostable, which means it can be broken down in industrial composting plants.

Renewable resource:

PLA is fermentatively produced from renewable raw materials, which reduces dependence on fossil raw materials. This makes PLA an attractive alternative to conventional petroleum-based plastics.

APPLICATIONS:

Textiles and nonwovens:

PLA fibers can be used in various textiles such as clothing, upholstery and bedding. Nonwovens made from PLA are used in wet wipes, diapers and medical products, among others.

Biomedical applications:

PLA is used in various biomedical applications such as surgical sutures, hot air nonwovens and face masks.

PLA is a major bioplastic on the market, providing a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to conventional plastics. Continuous research and development work is expanding its areas of application and optimizing its properties for various industries.
